Everything you need to plan your trip
The most common route is by overnight bus from Dhaka's Sayedabad or Fakirapul bus stands. Non-AC buses cost ৳800–1,000 and AC coaches run ৳1,200–1,400. The journey takes 8–10 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. Alternatively, you can take a bus to Chittagong (5–6 hrs) and then a local bus to Bandarban (2 hrs, ৳150).
There is no direct train or flight to Bandarban. The nearest airport is Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong.
November to March is the ideal window — dry weather, cool temperatures (15–25°C), and clear mountain views. This is peak trekking season.
April to May gets hot but offers fewer crowds and budget-friendly rates. June to September is monsoon season — trails become slippery, leeches are common, and some routes close entirely. Avoid unless you're an experienced trekker.
Nilgiri is the most accessible hilltop (2,200 ft) with panoramic views of the hill tracts. Reachable by jeep from Bandarban town in 45 minutes.
Boga Lake sits at 1,246 ft elevation — a natural lake surrounded by dense forest. Requires a 3–4 hour trek from Ruma Bazar.
Nafakhum Waterfall is the widest waterfall in Bangladesh, located in Thanchi upazila. The trek takes 5–6 hours one way from Thanchi Bazar and requires a local guide.
Chimbuk Hill (2,500 ft) is on the Bandarban-Thanchi road and offers sunrise/sunset views. Accessible by jeep.
Shoilo Propat is a small waterfall just 5 km from Bandarban town — perfect for a quick visit.
Meghla Tourist Complex near town has a hanging bridge, mini zoo, and boating lake. Good for families.
Trekking is the main draw — routes range from easy day hikes (Nilgiri, Chimbuk) to multi-day expeditions (Keokradong, Tajingdong). Rock climbing at Jibannagar and river rafting on the Sangu River are growing in popularity. Photography enthusiasts will find endless subjects in the tribal villages, bamboo bridges, and cloud-wrapped peaks.
You need a permit from the Bandarban District Commissioner's office for treks beyond Thanchi. Carry cash — there are very few ATMs outside Bandarban town. Mobile network coverage is limited on remote trails. Hiring a local guide is mandatory for Nafakhum and Boga Lake treks.
Common questions from travelers
You don't need a permit for Bandarban town, Nilgiri, or Chimbuk. However, treks to Boga Lake, Nafakhum, Keokradong, and areas beyond Thanchi require a permit from the District Commissioner's office in Bandarban. Your guide or tour operator can arrange this.
Group trips start from ৳6,500 per person for a 3-day trek covering Nilgiri and Chimbuk. Multi-day expeditions to Nafakhum or Boga Lake range from ৳9,000–15,000 depending on duration and group size. All trips include transport, meals, guide, and accommodation.
Bandarban town and popular spots like Nilgiri and Chimbuk are safe. For remote treks (Nafakhum, Boga Lake, Keokradong), solo travel is not recommended — you need a local guide and the trails can be challenging. Joining a group trip is the safest and most cost-effective option.
Essentials: trekking shoes with good grip, rain jacket (even in dry season), torch/headlamp, water bottle, basic first aid kit, insect repellent, and cash. For multi-day treks, pack light layers, a sleeping bag liner, and energy snacks. Leave heavy luggage at your hotel in town.
