Cox's Bazar is Bangladesh's most visited destination and for good reason. It sits on the southeastern coast of the country, where a sandy beach stretches approximately 120 kilometres along the Bay of Bengal, holding the record for the longest unbroken natural sea beach in the world. No breakwaters, no sea walls, no interruptions just an unbroken stretch of golden sand from Teknaf in the south to beyond Kuakata in the horizon.

Cox's Bazar Travel Guide

Everything you need to plan your trip

Getting There from Dhaka

Cox's Bazar is well-connected to Dhaka by three routes. The right choice depends on your budget, time, and comfort preference.

By Bus (Most Popular)

Dhaka to Cox's Bazar is one of Bangladesh's most heavily served intercity bus routes. Non-AC buses cost ৳700–900. AC coaches run ৳1,200–1,800. Luxury sleeper coaches with reclining seats cost ৳2,000–2,500. Journey time: 8–10 hours depending on traffic and departure time. Night buses are popular — you sleep through the journey and arrive in the morning. Recommended operators: Green Line, Shyamoli, Hanif, Ena, Royal Coach. Departs from Dhaka's Sayedabad or Gabtoli bus terminals.

By Flight (Fastest)

Biman Bangladesh, US-Bangla, and Novoair operate multiple daily flights from Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to Cox's Bazar Airport. Flight time: 55–65 minutes. Fares range from ৳3,500 (budget advance booking) to ৳8,000+ (peak season last-minute). Cox's Bazar Airport is small — it sits right on the edge of town, roughly 3 km from the main beach area.

By Train + Bus (Scenic Route)

Take the Mahanagor Provati or Mahanagar Godhuli train from Dhaka to Chittagong (6–7 hours), then a bus or CNG from Chittagong's Bahaddarhat terminal to Cox's Bazar (2.5–3 hours further). Total journey 9–10 hours but a more scenic option — the Chittagong coastline section of the bus route is particularly beautiful.

Getting Around Cox's Bazar

The main beach areas (Laboni, Sugandha, Kolatoli, Inani) are spread along Marine Drive — a coastal road running south from the town centre. CNGs (auto-rickshaws), beach buggies, and jeeps are the primary local transport. A CNG from town to Inani Beach costs ৳200–300 one way. Marine Drive is one of the most scenic coastal drives in Bangladesh — consider renting a jeep for a full-day Marine Drive and Inani trip.

Cox's Bazar is famous for having the world's longest natural sea beach an unbroken stretch of sandy coastline running 120 kilometres along the Bay of Bengal in southeastern Bangladesh. It is also Bangladesh's most popular domestic tourist destination, known for its sunsets, fresh seafood, water sports, and as the gateway to Saint Martin's Island Bangladesh's only coral island.

There are three options. By bus: AC coaches cost ৳1,200–1,800 and take 8–10 hours from Sayedabad, Arambag or Kalabagan terminals. November to March is the best time cool, dry, calm seas, and clear skies. December and January are peak months. November and February offer similar conditions with fewer crowds. Avoid June to September due to monsoon, rough seas, and cyclone risk. April and May are manageable but hot. Saint Martin's Island is only accessible October to March.

Yes, but it requires planning. You first travel to Teknaf (2–2.5 hours from Cox's Bazar by bus or jeep), then take the passenger ship to Saint Martin's Island (3–4 hours on the ship). The ship departs Teknaf at approximately 9:30am. A day trip is possible but rushed but most travellers stay 1–2 nights on the island. The island is only accessible October to March. Tripzic group trips that include Saint Martin's handle all transport logistics.

A 3-day, 2-night budget trip costs roughly ৳5,000–8,000 per person including sleeper bus, a shared mid-range hotel room, meals, and basic activities. Yes, Cox's Bazar is generally safe, but requires standard awareness. The main beach areas are busy with domestic tourists and generally safe during daylight hours. Female travellers should avoid deserted beach sections after dark. Dress modestly in the town loose, full-length clothing is culturally appropriate and reduces unwanted attention. Travelling in a group (as on a Tripzic trip) significantly improves the experience for solo female travellers. Our hosts maintain strict codes of conduct for all participants.

For a 3-day beach trip: lightweight breathable clothing (full coverage recommended for the main beach areas), swimwear (for hotel pools), sunscreen SPF 50+ (difficult to find good quality locally), sunglasses, a hat, flip-flops and a pair of closed shoes for the Inani rock pools, a waterproof bag for your phone at the beach, personal medication including seasickness tablets if visiting Saint Martin's, and cash in BDT most small vendors and beach activities are cash-only.
