Queen of Hills · Bangladesh's Cloud Kingdom · 1,800 feet above sea level · Army convoy system · Clouds below your feet · Indigenous Chakma and Marma culture · Group tours from ৳6,000
Sajek Valley is Bangladesh's most beautiful hill destination a high ridge of viewpoints, cottages and villages above the forests of the Chittagong Hill Tracts. Known as the Queen of Hills and Roof of Rangamati, the valley sits at the junction of the Kasalong mountain range at 1,800 feet above sea level high enough for clouds to form below the hilltops and roll through the valley at dawn like a slow white tide.
Everything you need to plan your trip
There is a moment on the road to Sajek Valley somewhere after the Baghaihat checkpoint, after the convoy has started climbing and the trees have closed around the jeep when the valley below disappears into white. You are above the clouds. Bangladesh is below you. The Mizoram hills of India are ahead. And the road keeps climbing.
The valley is surrounded by green mountains, dense forests, and hilly terrain. The inhabitants comprise various indigenous communities including the Chakma and Marma peoples, whose villages, weaving traditions, and bamboo cottages define the cultural texture of Sajek. This is not just a hill station it is a window into a way of life that most Bangladeshis have never encountered.
⚠️ Convoy system is mandatory. All tourist vehicles travel in a military-escorted convoy for safety. Convoys depart Baghaihat Army Checkpoint at 10:30 AM and 3:30 PM daily only. Miss both windows and you do not go that day. Plan your arrival in Khagrachari accordingly.
Step 1 — Dhaka to Khagrachari
Multiple buses serve this route daily from Dhaka's Gabtali or Kalabagan terminals.
📅 Book tickets in advance for weekends and holidays — buses sell out fast.
From Chittagong: 4–5 hours by bus to Khagrachari. ৳200–350 non-AC.
Step 2 — Khagrachari to Baghaihat Checkpoint
From Khagrachari's Shapla Chattar (town centre), hire a 4×4 Chander Gari (local jeep) — the only vehicle suitable for Sajek's steep hill roads.
Journey from Khagrachari to Baghaihat checkpoint: approximately 30 minutes.
⏰ To catch the 10:30 AM convoy: Be in Khagrachari by 8:00–8:30 AM — enough time to find a jeep, negotiate, and reach Baghaihat comfortably. Arrive at the checkpoint by 10:00 AM for registration.
Step 3 — The Army Convoy
For visitor safety, the army runs an escort system: all tourist vehicles travel in a convoy, guarded by military jeeps at the front and rear. Convoys depart from Baghaihat Army Checkpoint at exactly two times: 10:30 AM and 3:30 PM.
At the Baghaihat checkpoint, a soldier records your name, occupation, phone number, and vehicle details — convoy registration is mandatory for all passengers.
Return Convoy Times
Return convoys from Sajek also operate at fixed times — confirm the current departure schedule at your accommodation and at the Sajek Army Camp on arrival. Miss the return convoy and you stay another night.
Alternative Route -> Via Baghaichhari
Though Sajek is located in the Rangamati district, it is much easier to travel via Dighinala in Khagrachari district. Some travellers come directly from Baghaichhari by jeep or motorcycle — ৳300 per person by shared jeep. Confirm current route conditions locally before using this option.
Getting Around Sajek

October–February — Peak Season ⭐
The best time to visit Sajek Valley is October to March for clear weather and scenic views.October and November are the sweet spot, the monsoon has cleared, skies are sharp, and the cloud sea phenomenon (clouds rolling below the hilltops at dawn) is most dramatic. Temperatures are cool and comfortable (15–22°C at Konglak Para). This is when Sajek's signature image — white cloud tide below green hilltops — is most reliably visible.
March–May — Shoulder Season
Still pleasant. Fewer crowds than peak season. Prices drop. Some haze in May. Good for budget-conscious travelers who want a quieter Sajek.
June–September — Monsoon Season 🌧️
Heavy rain, slippery roads, reduced visibility. The Chittagong Hill Tracts receive extreme rainfall during monsoon. The mountain roads become genuinely dangerous. Not recommended some resorts close entirely and the convoy may be suspended during severe weather.
💡 Best single moment at Sajek: Wake at 5:00 AM on a clear October–February morning. Walk to the Konglak Para helipad viewpoint. Watch the cloud sea roll through the valley below as the sun rises over the Mizoram hills. This is the defining Sajek experience — and it is completely free.
---
Konglak Para — Highest Point & Cloud Kingdom 🌤️
Konglak Para is the highest point of Sajek at 1,800 feet, offering mesmerizing views of the Lushai Hills of India and the source of the Karnaphuli River. This is the viewpoint the photographers come for. At dawn, clouds form below the hilltop and roll through the valley like a slow tide the famous "cloud sea" of Sajek. The army helipad at Konglak Para is the best sunrise viewpoint on the entire ridge. Walk (45 minutes from Ruilui Para) or hire a motorcycle.
Ruilui Para — Indigenous Village & Cultural Heart 🏘️
Ruilui Para is the oldest village in Sajek, home to the Chakma and Marma tribal communities.Traditional bamboo and wooden houses on stilts. Women weaving on traditional looms the Chakma weaving tradition produces some of the most beautiful handwoven cloth in Bangladesh. Small shops sell indigenous handicrafts, handwoven scarves, and local snacks. Walk through the village respectfully these are people's homes, not a museum.
Ruilui Helipad Viewpoint 🔭
The Ruilui Para viewpoint near the helipad offers panoramic 180° views across the Chittagong Hill Tracts into Mizoram, India. One of the most photographed viewpoints in Bangladesh green hills rolling to the horizon with India beyond. Best at golden hour (late afternoon, 4:30–6:00 PM) when the light turns the hills amber.
Sajek Valley Main Ridge 🌿
The main tourist area resorts, restaurants, and cottages line the ridge between Ruilui Para and Konglak Para. Walk the ridge road at any time of day for changing views. Clouds drift through and around the ridge throughout the day in peak season sometimes you are in cloud, sometimes above it, sometimes below it.
Nearby Excursions from Khagrachari (Combine with Sajek)
On the way to or from Sajek, combine with Khagrachari's own attractions:
These three Khagrachari attractions add 2–3 hours to the journey and are worth combining with a Sajek trip.

🌅 Sunrise at Konglak Para Helipad
The single most important experience in Sajek. Set your alarm for 5:00 AM. Walk or take a motorcycle to Konglak Para (highest point). Watch the cloud sea roll below and the sun rise over the Mizoram hills. This sunrise view is considered one of the most spectacular natural phenomena available at any domestic Bangladesh destination. Bring a light jacket Konglak Para can drop to 12–15°C before dawn in November–January.
☁️ Cloud Sea Watching
The cloud sea — clouds forming below the hilltops and rolling through the valley is Sajek's signature phenomenon, most reliably seen on clear mornings in October through February. The clouds come and go throughout the day but dawn is the most dramatic window. Sit at any ridge-facing viewpoint or resort balcony and watch the valley fill with white.
🚶 Village Walk — Ruilui to Konglak Para
Walk the ridge road from Ruilui Para village to Konglak Para — approximately 45 minutes each way. Pass through indigenous communities, bamboo groves, and open hillside viewpoints. No guide needed for this trail — the road is clear and well-walked. Early morning (6:00–9:00 AM) is the best time before the jeep convoys make the road dusty.
🎨 Indigenous Handicraft Shopping at Ruilui Para
The Chakma and Marma women of Ruilui Para weave traditional cloth on handlooms pinon (sarong), khadi scarves, and handmade bags. Prices are reasonable and the craft is genuinely traditional, not tourist-manufactured. Ask before photographing weavers at their looms most are happy to be photographed but it is courtesy to ask first.
🔥 Bamboo Chicken (Boro Mangsho) — Sajek's Famous Dish
Bamboo chicken chicken cooked inside a sealed bamboo tube over an open fire is Sajek's signature culinary experience and the most popular dish at every resort restaurant. The bamboo seals the steam and infuses the chicken with a smoky, earthy flavour unlike anything available in the city. Order in advance at your resort it takes 45–60 minutes to prepare. Every group visiting Sajek should eat bamboo chicken at least once.
📸 Photography — Dawn to Dusk
Sajek is Bangladesh's most photogenic hill destination. Key shots: cloud sea from Konglak helipad at dawn · indigenous weaving at Ruilui Para · bamboo forest trail in morning mist · resort balcony with Mizoram hills at dusk · convoy jeeps climbing the mountain road. Bring a wide-angle lens and a travel tripod for dawn shots — the light changes fast and the cloud sea lasts 30–60 minutes before lifting.
🏕️ Alutila Cave (Day Excursion — Khagrachari)
Stop on the way to or from Sajek. The 350-metre natural cave tunnel at Alutila runs through the hillside with a stream at its base — carry a torch, wade through knee-deep water at some points, and emerge at a hillside facing the valley below. Entry: ৳50. Worth 2–3 hours including the Richhang Waterfall nearby.

⏰ The convoy is non-negotiable — plan around it
There is a time schedule to go to Sajek Valley: tourists must reach Baghaihat Army Camp by 10:00 AM for the 10:30 convoy, or before 3:00 PM for the afternoon convoy. Miss both and you are not allowed into the valley that day.Plan your Dhaka departure to arrive in Khagrachari well before 8:00 AM — overnight buses work perfectly for this.
📅 Book accommodation before leaving Dhaka
Book quality resorts early the better ridge-facing cottages sell out fast, especially for Friday nights and long weekends. Do not arrive at Sajek expecting to find accommodation peak season means everything is booked. Reserve by phone or online before departure.
🚫 Do not ride on the jeep roof
The mountain roads are steep, winding, and have no guard rails in sections. The road to Sajek is very winding and high — riding on the roof of the jeep is dangerous. Sit inside the vehicle. Keep windows closed on dusty sections.
🌙 Carry a torch for night walking
The valley is dark at night. Resort generators provide electricity for a few hours in the evening after they cut off, the ridge road is completely dark. Carry a torch or phone torch for any night movement between cottages and viewpoints.
🎒 Pack snacks for the journey
Carry biscuits, nuts, and fruit for the 10–12 hours of travel on arrival day. The Dhaka → Khagrachari → Sajek journey is long. There are roadside stalls on the way but stops are unpredictable. Pack dry snacks, water, and ORS sachets.
📷 Arrive at Konglak Para before 6:00 AM for cloud sea
The cloud sea phenomenon peaks at dawn — typically 5:30–7:00 AM on clear mornings. By 8:00 AM the clouds often lift. Ask your resort the previous evening what the weather forecast is and whether the cloud sea is expected.
🏔️ Respect indigenous community privacy
Sajek's villages are home to Chakma and Marma families who live here year-round. Walk through villages respectfully, ask before photographing people, do not enter private homes uninvited, and support local shops and handicraft sellers rather than resort-only purchasing.

Sajek Valley is safe for Bangladeshi tourists. (cite index="35-1">The area is monitored by security forces. All tourists travel in army-escorted convoys and must register at the Baghaihat Army Checkpoint.</cite) The convoy system exists specifically for tourist safety — it works effectively and has operated for years.
For foreign nationals:
The Chittagong Hill Tracts are a restricted area for foreign nationals who require prior permission from Bangladesh's Ministry of Home Affairs. Foreign nationals should confirm current permit requirements well in advance. As of July 2026, some foreign government advisories recommend caution for the CHT region — Bangladeshi citizens are not affected by these advisories.

Yes but it is significantly more expensive solo since jeep costs are per vehicle, not per person. Sajek is safe, with army camps ensuring security. Solo travelers should join a Tripzic group trip or connect with other travellers at Khagrachari's jeep stand to share vehicle costs. The convoy system also means you naturally travel alongside other groups, solo visitors are never truly alone on the mountain road.
